K1 Integration Guide

The K1 was designed to support a wide range of possible options to allow customers to configure the end system to meet their needs. This guide provides more detail about the individual options available on the K1 and possible conflicts or limitations possible in different configurations. This guide covers all the standard versions of the K1.

This document covers the version of the K1 in production as of May 2012.

The K1 supports either the In Win thin mini-ITX heat sink or the Intel equivalent model. The In Win unit has a couple of minor differences that the Intel one as documented in the table below.

ATOM Family MBs

The K1 offers an Atom specific cooling kit. The cooling kit includes a blower, mounting screws and standoffs.
AC Adapters
Core Family MBs

The standard model of the K1 supports a 120W 100-240V AC adapter. The AC adapter is supplied with the DC connector required by the Core family motherboards. The current adapter will not work with the Intel DN2800MT motherboard. The AC adapter requires a power cord with a C8 connector for connecting to the AC adapter.

ATOM Family MBs

An ATOM family specific AC adapter is available. The adapter is a 65W 100- 240V unit. The AC adapter supports replaceable power tips to allow the AC adapter to be used with either Core family or ATOM family motherboards. The AC adapter is supplied with tips for both types of motherboards. The AC adapter requires a power cord with a C6 connector for connecting to the AC adapter.

Internal Optical Drive

The standard models of the K1 support configurations with no optical drive installed. An optical drive filler plate is available for installation to cover the optical drive opening in the front bezel. Please note no EMI shield is required for the optical drive as the drive is outside the chassis EMI shield

Internal USB Expansion Port

Core Family MBs

The standard models of the K1 support an internal USB expansion port. The expansion port allows for the installation of a USB device within the K1 chassis. The USB expansion port supports the installation of wireless devices with full functionality.

ATOM Family MBs

The standard models of the K1 do not support the USB expansion port with ATOM family MBs. TheATOM class MBs only has 4 front panel USB ports and all ports are used for the front panel connectors. An OEM version is possible with one of the front panel USB ports blocked off.

Internal Wi-Fi Antennas

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of 2 antennas. The antenna is designed to

support the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. This allows the antennas to support Bluetooth and 802.11 a,b,g & n. The same antenna is used for the main and auxiliary connections. The holder for the antenna is designed into the K1 chassis so only the antennas are required for installation.

External Wi-Fi Antennas

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of external 2 antennas. The antenna is designed to support the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies. This allows the antennas to support Bluetooth and 802.11 a,b,g & n. The same antenna is used for the main and auxiliary connections. The external antennas kit also supports using a different external antenna connection. High gain antennas, (powered or passive) can be used to extend the range of the wireless connection or improve the system performance in a difficult W-Fi environment.

Core Family MBs

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of the SCR using the internal USB port

connection. Therefore the internal USB port cannot be used for another purpose when the SCR is

installed. An OEM version is possible with one of the front panel USB ports blocked off that allows the SCR to be connected to one of the internal front panel USB connectors. The SCR kit includes the

mounting screws and USB cable. The SCR is supported for both contact and contactless operation.

ATOM Family MBs

The standard models of the K1 do not support the SCR with ATOM family MBs. The ATOM class MBs

only has 4 front panel USB ports and all ports are used for the front panel connectors. An OEM version is possible with one of the front panel USB ports blocked off.

Serial/Parallel Rear Panel Cables

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of a parallel port and 2 serial ports on the rear panel. A cable kit is available that provides the cables required to install the connectors in the rear panel and connect them to the motherboard.

Cover Pad Lock

Core Family MBs/ATOM family MBs

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of 2 Pad Locks to secure the cover in place. The pad locks should have a maximum diameter of 5mm and an opening of 20mm. See the picture below for specific dimensions.

Kensington Locks

The standard models of the K1 support the installation of 2 Kensington type locks. The locks can be used to secure the monitor to the K1 and the K1 to the point used to secure the units.

Desktop Security Plate

The standard models of the K1 support installation using a desktop security plate. The security plate is designed to be bolted to a desktop mounting surface to provide an anchor point for the system. The AC adapter and required cables can be mounted in the security plate to prevent access to the system’s various cable connections. The security plate includes a number of cable strain relief points to prevent damage to the cables from attempts to pulls the cables out. A set of mounting rails are then installed on the bottom of the K1 and the unit is slide into the desktop security plate. The K1 unit is then secured in place using one or two padlocks. Access to the monitor arm mounting screws is also prevented once the K1 is installed in the desktop security plate. It is recommended that only internal antennas are used in configurations that will be mounted in the desktop securing plate.

The standard models of the K1 support installation using a desktop mounting plate. The desktop

mounting plate is similar in design to the desktop security mounting plate however full access to the rear panel connectors is provided.

Specialized Options

The following options are available on an OEM basis. 

Consumer Infrared Remote Control

The standard models of the K1 support installation of a front panel with a RC6 IR remote compatible interface. The front panel module also supports 2 USB 2.0 ports, one of which is equipped with a USBBCS Version 1.2 compatible charging port and a HD Audio speaker and microphone connectors.

Monitor Arms

The standard models of the K1 support a number of different monitor arms. All monitor options are

support on either the Core family or ATOM family motherboards.

No Monitor configurations

The standard models of the K1 support not having any monitor arm installed. A plastic blanking plate is available to covers the opening normally used for the monitor arm. The K1 is designed to support placing a standard monitor on top of the unit.

Adjustable Monitor Arm

The standard models of the K1 support a monitor mounting arm that allows for 100mm of vertical
height adjustment. The monitor arm supports both portrait and landscape orientations and provides for tilt adjustment of the monitor. The adjustable monitor arm supports monitors with a display area of 19 – 27” that have a 75 or 100mm VESA mounting featured. The adjustable monitor arm is supplied with 4mm X 10mm mounting screws for mounting the monitor.
